Presta Meaning in Cycling

Presta refers to a specific type of thin valve found on high-pressure bicycle inner tubes. You will mostly see these on road bikes and high-end mountain bikes. They are much narrower than the chunky valves found on car tires or cheap bikes. To pump up a Presta valve, you must first unscrew a tiny nut at the very top. After inflating the tire, you tighten the nut back down to seal the air inside. This design is preferred because it holds high pressure very well and requires a smaller hole in the rim. Small holes make the metal rim stronger and more durable over time. For example, a road cyclist uses a Presta-compatible pump to reach the high pressures needed for fast riding. They are easy to recognize by their slender, metallic appearance. Always remember to close the nut after pumping to avoid slow leaks.
