Pull Meaning in Weightlifting

A pull describes the portion of a lift where the athlete moves the barbell from the floor. This phase involves using the legs and back to accelerate the weight upward toward the hips. A successful lift depends on keeping the bar very close to the body during this entire movement. The coach told the athlete to maintain a steady pull to keep the bar balanced. Developing a strong pulling motion builds the foundation for catching heavy weights in the snatch or clean. Lifters often perform pull-only exercises to increase their strength without the stress of catching the bar.
