The rail is the top edge of the table that surrounds the playing surface. It sits above the cushions. Players sometimes rest their hand on the rail for support. The rail also helps contain the balls during play. It forms the outer boundary of the table. For example, a player leans slightly on the rail while reaching for a shot. The rail provides stability and structure to the table.
