Definition: RBI stands for “Run Batted In.” It is a statistic credited to a batter when a play they make—such as a hit, a sacrifice fly, or even a groundout—causes a teammate to run home and score.
An RBI is the primary way to measure how much a player contributes to their team’s score. You can earn an RBI by hitting a home run (which counts as an RBI for yourself and any runners on base), hitting a single that drives a runner in, or even being walked when the bases are loaded. It is a “stat of results,” showing that the batter successfully came through in a big moment to help the team get points.
Example: With a runner on third base, the batter hit a deep fly ball to the outfield, earning an RBI as his teammate safely crossed home plate.
