Recovery refers to the process of returning the boat to a stable, upright, and controlled state after an incident like a capsize, a broach, or a man-overboard. In a dinghy, recovery usually involves the crew standing on the centerboard to right the vessel. One specific example involves a crew performing a ‘quick-stop’ recovery maneuver to pick up a hat that blew overboard. A successful recovery requires calm communication and practiced drills to ensure no equipment is lost and no one is injured. In racing, a ‘fast recovery’ after a tactical mistake can be the difference between winning and losing. It is the ‘reset’ button for a boat in distress.
