A relay is a series of throws used to move the ball long. Outfielders throw to an infielder who then throws to the intended base. This method is faster and more accurate than one single very long throw. The middle person in the relay is often called the cutoff man. A left fielder throws to the shortstop who then fires to the catcher. This play stops a runner from scoring after a deep hit to fence. Relays are essential for defense on large fields with fast running offensive players. Coordination and loud communication are required to execute a perfect relay under pressure. Teams practice these multi player throws to ensure the ball reaches home plate quickly.
