Relay Start Meaning in Swimming

A relay start allows the second, third, and fourth swimmers to begin with a rolling motion. Unlike a flat start, these athletes can start moving their arms before the teammate touches. This movement helps the swimmer dive into the water with more momentum and higher initial speed. The swimmer must keep their toes in contact with the block until the wall touch occurs. An athlete performs a circular arm swing to prepare for their relay start in lane four. These starts are typically faster than individual starts because the swimmer is already in motion. Teams practice these starts to find the perfect balance between maximum speed and a legal exchange. A powerful relay start helps the team maintain a fast pace throughout the entire race.
