A replay call is a whistle from the umpire for a specific ball handling violation. This occurs when a player loses control of the ball and then picks it up again. Netball rules state a player cannot drop and recover the ball unless another player touches it. This penalty results in a free pass being awarded to the opposing team at that spot. A center receives a replay call after fumbling a catch and grabbing it off the floor. Maintaining a firm grip on the ball during the initial catch prevents this technical error. This rule encourages high levels of ball control and prevents players from dribbling the ball. One real-world example involves a player losing the ball and picking it up before a defender.
