A reset pass is a tactical throw directed backward or sideways to maintain team possession. When attackers cannot find a path forward, they pass to a teammate in a safer area. This move allows the team to reorganize their offense and look for a new opening. It is a patient strategy used to tire out a hardworking and tight defensive unit. A wing attack makes a reset pass to the center standing near the transverse line. This prevents the ball carrier from being trapped and forced into a held ball violation. Using the whole court in this way keeps the ball moving and creates new leading spaces. One real-world example shows a team passing the ball back to the defense to restart an attack.
