To restart play means to begin the game again after a stoppage. Stoppages occur after goals, fouls, out of bounds, or official referee whistles. Each situation has a specific method for returning the ball into active play.
Examples include the center throw-off, free throws, and the goalkeeper’s goal throw. The game cannot continue until the ball is legally put back in motion. A playmaker restarts play with a quick pass after a minor defensive foul.
This action allows the offense to resume their scoring attempt near the goal. Rules dictate exactly where the player must stand for each type of restart.
