Retirement Meaning in Formula 1

Retirement happens when a driver cannot finish the race. The car stops running before the checkered flag. This can result from damage or technical problems. Once retired, the driver leaves the competition. For example, an engine problem may force a car to pull off track. Marshals then remove the vehicle safely. A retirement means zero points for that race. It can hurt championship hopes badly. Teams work hard to improve reliability. Finishing races is often as important as speed.
