Rim Tape Meaning in Cycling

Rim tape is a thin strip of protective material that lines the inside of a bicycle rim. Its primary job is to cover the sharp holes where the spokes connect to the rim. Without this tape, the high pressure of the inflated inner tube would push it into those holes and cause a flat tire. Most rim tape is made from durable cloth, plastic, or specialized adhesive rubber. It must be wide enough to cover the entire center channel of the rim without moving around. If you are using a tubeless setup, the tape must also create an airtight seal to keep air from escaping. For example, a mechanic will install fresh rim tape before putting a new tube into a wheel to prevent any mystery punctures. It is an inexpensive part that provides essential protection for your inner tubes. Always check the condition of your tape if you experience frequent flats that seem to come from the inside.
