Roll Meaning in Handball

A roll is a tactical movement where a player turns toward the goal. This action usually follows a screen or pick set against a defender. The player uses their body to shield the opponent before spinning into open space. Rolling allows the attacker to become an immediate passing option in the scoring zone. This movement is a fundamental part of the two-man game between playmakers and pivots. A pivot sets a screen and then performs a roll to receive a pass. This maneuver creates a high-probability shooting chance near the six meter line area. Success depends on the timing of the turn and the speed of the transition. Players must maintain balance while rotating to ensure they can catch the ball cleanly. Mastering the roll helps an offense exploit gaps in even the tightest defensive lines.
