Rounding the base is the curved path a runner takes near a bag. Instead of running in a straight line, the player arcs outward before touch. This allows the runner to maintain full speed while turning toward next base. A proper turn helps the player reach the following bag much more quickly. A batter rounds first base after hitting a ball into the right field. The runner touches the inside corner of the bag to stay balanced. This technique prevents the runner from having to slow down or stop completely. Coaches teach the banana turn to help beginners learn the correct rounding path. Efficient rounding is a fundamental part of aggressive and successful base running play.
