A roundoff layout is a tumbling pass that ends in a flip. The gymnast performs a roundoff to gain speed and backward power. Immediately after the roundoff, the athlete jumps into a backward flip. The gymnast keeps the body perfectly straight and stiff during the flip. No bending at the hips or the knees occurs during the flight. The legs stay together and the toes remain pointed for a line. This move shows the power and the form of the gymnast. A gymnast executes a roundoff layout across the floor exercise mat. The athlete must push off the hands during the roundoff for height. Keeping the core very tight prevents the back from arching too much. The gymnast lands on both feet with the arms reaching upward. This skill is a step up from a basic tucked back flip. The athlete must maintain a high speed to finish the straight flip. Judges watch for a clear straight body position from head to toe. This pass often serves as the start of a longer tumbling sequence.
