A rundown occurs when a runner is trapped between two bases by the defense. This situation forces the runner to move back and forth to avoid being tagged out. Multiple fielders usually participate by tossing the ball to close the gap on the runner. The goal of the defense is to record an out with minimal throws. A runner gets caught in a rundown between second base and third base. The shortstop and third baseman toss the ball to eventually apply a tag. This play requires quick feet and clear communication to prevent the runner from escaping. Defenders must stay out of the direct running path to avoid an obstruction penalty. A successful rundown quickly removes a threat from the base paths during the game.
