Safe Meaning in Softball

Safe is the call made when a runner reaches a base without being out. This occurs when the player touches the bag before the ball or a tag. The umpire signals this by extending both arms out to the side horizontally. A safe call means the runner remains on the base to continue play. A runner slides into second base just before the shortstop applies the tag. The umpire yells safe and the offensive team maintains their position on field. This is the most desired outcome for any baserunner during an active play. Runners must stay on the bag until the next pitch to remain truly safe. Achieving a safe arrival is the primary goal of every offensive base running attempt.
