A safety car is deployed after a serious incident. It enters the track and leads the field. All drivers must slow down and follow. Overtaking becomes forbidden under normal conditions. Marshals clear debris safely during this time. For example after a crash the safety car collects the pack. Gaps between cars disappear behind it. This can change race strategy quickly. Some drivers choose to pit then. Racing resumes once conditions are safe. The safety car protects drivers and track workers.
