Scratch Meaning in Billiards

A scratch happens when the cue ball goes into a pocket. This is usually a mistake. It often gives the opponent an advantage. Many games allow the opponent to place the cue ball freely afterward. Players try to avoid scratching at all costs. For example, a player pockets the object ball but also sinks the cue ball. The turn ends immediately. A scratch can quickly change control of the game.
