Scrum Engagement Meaning in Rugby Union

Scrum engagement refers to the specific process and sequence of the two forward packs coming together. The referee manages this carefully to ensure the safety and stability of all sixteen players involved. There is a strict three-step call of crouch, bind, and set that the players must follow exactly. During the crouch, players get into a low power stance. On the bind, the props reach out and grip their opponents’ jerseys. Finally, on set, the two front rows make contact and begin the physical push for the ball. For example, if a team pushes before the set call, the referee will stop play and award a penalty. This process prevents the dangerous high-speed collisions that used to happen in older versions of the game.
