A shadow block is a blocking movement without fully jumping to block the ball. The blocker jumps lightly or stays grounded.
The goal is to slow the hitter or force a safer shot. Therefore, discipline matters. This technique works against quick or deceptive hitters. Beginners use it to learn timing. During a rally, a hitter approaches fast. The blocker reads the play late.
Instead of committing fully, she shadows the hitter’s angle. The hitter tips the ball softly. A defender digs it easily. Shadow blocking supports team defense. It helps control space rather than chasing kills.
