Shiko Dachi describes the square stance which resembles a traditional sumo wrestling posture. A student places the feet wide and turns the toes outward at angles. The hips drop low while the knees stay aligned over the feet. This position provides a very heavy and grounded base for powerful movements. A karate practitioner uses this stance to generate force for a low-level strike. Keeping the back vertical prevents the center of gravity from shifting too far. This stance builds incredible hip flexibility and leg power for various martial arts techniques. The weight stays perfectly centered between the feet to allow for stable movement. Students use this stance to develop the muscles needed for explosive jumping or kicking. This posture helps the body absorb force when blocking a heavy incoming attack. Lowering the hips further increases the difficulty and the strengthening benefits of the exercise. Many styles use this stance as a primary tool for developing overall lower body conditioning.
