Definition: A shoestring catch is a play where a fielder catches a ball just before it hits the grass, usually by reaching down near their feet (or “shoestrings”) while running. It requires the fielder to scoop the ball inches off the ground to prevent it from becoming a hit.
Example: The center fielder made an incredible shoestring catch to end the inning, snagging the sinking line drive just before it touched the dirt.
