A short crosscourt is a clever shot that lands near the opponent’s sideline and very close to the net. Unlike a deep shot, this ball uses a sharp angle to pull the rival off the side of the court. It is usually hit with a lot of topspin to make the ball dip down quickly and bounce wide. This creates a massive gap in the rest of the court for the next shot. It is a very effective way to beat an opponent who is faster or stronger than you. By using geometry instead of power, you make the court feel much larger for the other player. For example, a player might hit a short crosscourt forehand to force their opponent into the doubles alley. This leaves the entire middle and opposite side of the court completely open for an easy winner. It is a sophisticated tactic that requires great feel and a relaxed wrist. This shot is a nightmare for players who are slow at moving sideways.
