A short hop is a shot where the player hits the ball almost immediately after it touches the ground. In tennis, this is also called a half-volley. The player swings their racquet just as the ball starts its upward bounce. This requires incredible timing and very quick reflexes because there is almost no time to prepare. Players use this technique when they are caught moving forward and cannot wait for a full bounce. It allows the athlete to stay aggressive and take time away from the opponent. While difficult to master, it is a vital skill for anyone who wants to play close to the net. For example, a player might hit a short hop when a deep shot lands right at their feet as they move in. Successfully hitting this shot keeps the momentum of the attack moving forward. It turns a difficult defensive moment into a smooth and stylish offensive play. Precision is far more important than power when timing a short hop.
