Short Volley Meaning in Tennis

A short volley is a delicate shot that lands just over the net in the opponent’s court. It is often called a ‘drop volley’ because the ball drops quickly after crossing the net. This shot is used when the opponent is far away and expecting a deep, powerful return. The player uses very little force and often adds a bit of backspin to make the ball die. For example, a player at the net sees their opponent sprinting backward and hits a soft short volley.
