Shortstop Meaning in Baseball

Definition: The shortstop is the defensive player who stands between second and third base. This position is considered one of the most difficult and important on the field because more balls are hit to that area than any other.

The shortstop must be extremely agile, have quick hands, and possess a very strong throwing arm to get the ball to first base in time. They are often the “leader” of the infield, helping to coordinate plays and covering second base during steals or double plays.

Example: The shortstop dove into the dirt to stop a hard ground ball and threw the runner out from his knees.
