Shot Selection Meaning in Netball

Shot selection is the decision-making process an attacker uses to choose between shooting or passing. A player evaluates their distance from the post and the level of defensive pressure currently being applied. Choosing a high-percentage shot from a close range is generally better than a long-distance attempt during play. If the angle is poor, the shooter might pass back to a teammate to find space. A goal shooter uses shot selection by passing to the goal attack who is much closer. Smart selection helps maintain a high team scoring average and reduces the risk of defensive rebounds. This strategy requires players to put the needs of the team above their individual scoring totals. One real-world example involves a player passing the ball away because a defender blocked their view.
