Definition: A shutout occurs when a team’s pitchers prevent the opposing team from scoring a single run for the entire game. The game ends with the losing team having zero runs on the scoreboard.
A shutout can be achieved by one pitcher throwing the whole game (called a “Complete Game Shutout”) or by a combination of several pitchers. It is a sign of total defensive and pitching dominance. While a “No-Hitter” means the team got no hits, a shutout simply means they never crossed home plate, even if they managed to get a few hits along the way.
Example: The home team won 5–0, finishing the night with a shutout because their pitchers never allowed the visitors to score.
