Single speed refers to a bicycle that has only one gear ratio and no derailleurs or shifters. This means the rider cannot change gears to make climbing easier or descending faster. It is the simplest form of a modern bicycle and requires very little mechanical maintenance over its long life. These bikes are popular for city commuting and for riders who enjoy a pure, uncomplicated experience on the road. For example, a cyclist might use a single speed bike for their short daily trip to the local grocery store. Without the weight of extra gears, these bikes are often very light and surprisingly quiet to ride. I find that riding a single speed is a great way to build significant leg strength on hilly terrain. You have to commit to every climb and use your momentum to reach the top of the hill. It forces you to focus on your pedaling technique rather than constantly fiddling with your gear levers. It is a back-to-basics approach that many people find very rewarding and fun.
