A slop shot is a ball that goes into a pocket by total accident. This happens when you miss your intended target but the ball falls in anyway. These are often called luck shots or flukes by other players. In some casual games, a slop shot counts and you get to keep playing. However, in professional call-shot games, these accidental scores do not count and your turn ends. It usually results from a messy cluster of balls where anything can happen. While it can be helpful, relying on slop shots is not a good long-term strategy. For example, a player misses a corner shot but the ball bounces off three rails and falls into the side. The player apologizes for the slop shot as they continue their turn in a friendly game. It is a reminder that luck plays a small but funny role in billiards. Most serious players prefer to win through skill and intention.
