Slow pitch is a version of softball where the ball is thrown in an arc. The pitcher must deliver the ball with a visible hump between six and twelve feet. This slow speed makes the ball much easier for the batter to hit fairly. Slow pitch games emphasize hitting and defense over the dominant power of a pitcher. A pitcher tosses a slow arc that lands directly on the back of plate. The batter swings and hits a long fly ball toward the deep outfield fence. This style of play is very popular in social and recreational community softball leagues. Teams usually consist of ten players rather than the nine used in fastpitch games. It provides a fun and inclusive environment for players of all different skill levels.
