Soto Uke is the outside block that moves from the ear toward the center. A student swings the forearm inward to push a strike away from the chest. The blocking arm stays bent at a ninety-degree angle for maximum structural strength. This movement effectively clears the midline of the body from any incoming punches. A karate practitioner uses this block to deflect a straight punch to the stomach. The hips rotate with the block to increase the total amount of force. Keeping the elbow close to the ribs provides better leverage during the defensive move. This technique teaches students how to use the large muscles of the back. Proper timing ensures the block meets the attack before it reaches the body.
