The split position refers to the lunge stance used during the catch of a lift. The front foot sits flat on the floor with the knee over the ankle. The back foot rests on the toes with the heel raised off the ground. Both legs bend slightly to absorb the downward force of the heavy metal barbell. An athlete holds this wide stance to maintain balance after catching a very heavy weight. Distributing weight evenly between both feet prevents the lifter from falling forward or backward. Coaches check that the feet are shoulder width apart for the best lateral stability.
