Square leg is a fielding position located on the leg side, exactly ninety degrees away from the pitch in line with the batter’s wickets. This fielder is primarily responsible for catching ‘pull’ shots and stopping balls that are flicked off the pads.
Example: The batter mistimed his sweep shot, and the ball flew straight into the hands of the fielder standing at square leg.
Pro-Tip: This is one of the most common spots for an umpire to stand when they are not at the bowler’s end. It is a key position for monitoring ‘stumping’ attempts and ensuring the batter stays behind the white crease line during the play.
