A stagiaire is an amateur or under-23 rider who joins a professional team on a trial basis late in the season. The term is French for intern and usually applies to the period from August 1st until the end of the year.
This gives pro teams a chance to see how a young talent handles the pressure of top-tier racing. If the rider performs well, they are often rewarded with a full professional contract for the following season.
For example, a young American rider might be invited as a stagiaire for a famous team to race in a smaller European event. It is a huge opportunity for a developing athlete to learn from veteran professionals and show their grit. I view the stagiaire period as the ultimate job interview performed at thirty miles per hour.
Riders must work hard to support the team while also trying to prove their own individual strength. It is a time of high stress, but also the gateway to a professional career. Many of the sport’s biggest stars began their journey as a humble and hungry stagiaire.
