Starboard-tack advantage refers to the primary right-of-way rule in sailing where a boat on a ‘starboard tack’ (wind coming over the right side) has priority over a boat on a ‘port tack.’ In racing and general navigation, this means the port-tack boat must stay clear and change course. One specific example involves a sailor on a starboard tack maintaining their course while a nearby competitor is forced to turn (tack) away. This rule is the most fundamental ‘law’ of the sea for avoiding collisions between sailing vessels. Knowing you have the starboard-tack advantage gives you a significant tactical ‘shield’ when navigating through a crowded fleet.
