The stem is the component that connects the handlebars to the steering tube of the bicycle fork. It plays a vital role in both the steering of the bike and the overall fit for the rider. By changing the length or angle of the stem, you can move your handlebars closer, further away, higher, or lower. This allows you to find the perfect balance between comfort and an aerodynamic racing position.
For example, a road racer might use a long, low stem to get into a sleek tuck for more speed. A mountain biker often uses a very short stem to improve their control and agility on technical forest trails. I believe the stem is one of the most important parts to adjust when fine-tuning your bike’s handling characteristics. It must be clamped securely to ensure your steering remains precise and safe at all times.
