A stepping violation is the formal penalty resulting from illegal foot movement while in possession of the ball. Netball regulations strictly forbid players from walking, running, or dragging their landing foot after a catch.
When this foul occurs, the umpire stops play and gives the ball to the non-offending team. This error often happens when a player is moving too fast or loses their physical balance. A center commits a stepping violation by lifting their grounded foot before releasing the ball during play.
To avoid this, players must focus on landing with a firm and balanced stance on the court. This rule is one of the most frequently called infractions for beginners learning the technical skills. One real-world example features a player losing the ball because they hopped while looking for a teammate.
