A streamline kick is a drill where the swimmer remains in a tight underwater position. The athlete holds their arms straight over their head with their hands overlapped to minimize resistance. They use a powerful flutter or dolphin kick to move through the water without using their arms. This exercise emphasizes the importance of body alignment and core strength for underwater speed and efficiency. A swimmer completes a lap of streamline kick to improve their distance off the wall. Maintaining a ‘pencil’ shape helps the athlete feel how to cut through the water most effectively. Coaches use this drill to ensure swimmers do not let their arms drift apart during race starts. A strong streamline kick is the foundation for fast transitions after every turn in the pool.
