The streamline position is the most hydrodynamic shape a human body can take in the water. Swimmers achieve this by squeezing their ears with their upper arms and overlapping their palms. The legs are held tightly together with the toes pointed to create a long and narrow profile. This position is used immediately after every start and turn to maintain maximum speed with zero drag. An athlete enters the water in a perfect streamline position after a powerful dive from the block. Even a small gap between the arms can create resistance and slow the swimmer down significantly. Mastering this posture is the most effective way to improve overall swimming times for any stroke. Coaches call this the ‘hidden yardage’ because it provides free speed without extra physical exertion.
