Strikeout Swinging Meaning in Softball

A strikeout swinging happens when a batter misses the ball on the third strike. This out occurs regardless of whether the pitch was inside or outside the zone. The batter attempts to hit the ball but fails to make any physical contact. This is one of the most common ways a pitcher records an out in game. A batter swings hard at a high rise ball but misses the spinning softball. The catcher secures the ball and the umpire signals that the batter is out. This result proves the pitcher was able to overpower the hitter with speed or spin. Pitchers work to increase their strikeout totals to prevent the ball from entering play. It is a dominant defensive play that stops the offensive momentum of the opponent.
