String Line Meaning in Billiards

The string line is an imaginary line across the table near the head area. It runs between the second diamonds on the long rails. Many games use this line to control ball placement. Players often must break from behind it. It also defines legal starting positions. For example, before the break, a player places the cue ball behind the string line. Shooting from that area makes the break valid. The string line creates a clear boundary for fair starts.
