A stroke judge call is the official report of a rule violation made by an observer. When a judge sees an error, they raise their hand to signal the infraction to the referee. They then write a detailed description of what happened and which specific rule the swimmer broke. This call is the formal mechanism that leads to a disqualification for the athlete in that heat. A judge makes a call because the swimmer failed to touch the wall with both hands. The referee must review and approve the call before the final results are posted on the board. Athletes can sometimes protest a call if they believe the official made a mistake in their observation. These calls ensure that every swimmer follows the same technical standards to keep the competition fair.
