A strong bottom hand refers to a batter using their dominant hand (the one lower on the handle) to provide extra power and ‘flick’ to their shots. While great for hitting sixes and playing ‘cross-bat’ shots, a bottom hand that is too strong can cause the ball to be hit accidentally into the air.
Example: The batter’s strong bottom hand allowed him to whip the ball from outside off stump all the way to the mid-wicket boundary.
Pro-Tip: Most coaches encourage a ‘top-hand dominant’ grip for defensive play to keep the ball on the ground. However, in the final overs of a T20 game, players intentionally tighten their bottom-hand grip to generate the massive force needed to clear the ropes.
