Sukui Uke is a circular karate technique known as the scooping block used to catch low attacks. The practitioner moves their arm in a large upward arc to catch the leg or arm of an opponent. This movement resembles the action of scooping water and is often used to unbalance a kicking attacker. Once the limb is caught the defender can pull or lift it to throw the person down. It requires a low stance and strong core stability to handle the weight of an incoming leg kick. An athlete scoops a low roundhouse kick and lifts the leg to make the opponent lose balance. Timing the scoop perfectly ensures the defender does not take the full force of the strike on the arm. This block turns a defensive move into a powerful opportunity for a takedown or throw.
