Sumi-Gaeshi Meaning in Judo

Sumi-Gaeshi is a corner sacrifice throw performed by falling onto the back. The attacker sits down while placing a foot on the inner thigh. This leg lifts the opponent into the air during the backward fall. The defender travels over the head of the attacker to the floor. One game example shows a player scoring after a failed hip attack. This move requires the attacker to stay very close to the opponent. Success depends on the timing of the roll and the leg lift. The attacker ends up on top of the defender after the throw. Strategy involves using the momentum of a pushing opponent to start the fall. This technique provides a dynamic way to reverse a match on the mat.
