Supercompensation Meaning in Cycling

Supercompensation is the biological process where your body becomes stronger after recovering from a difficult workout. When you exercise hard, you cause tiny amounts of damage to your muscles and deplete your energy. During the rest period that follows, your body repairs itself to a level that is slightly higher than before. This means you end up with more strength and better endurance than you had before the ride. For example, a cyclist who takes a rest day after a big mountain ride is using supercompensation to improve. If you train again too soon, you miss this peak and can actually become weaker over time. I find that the secret to getting fast is not just the riding, but the quality of your rest. Timing your hardest efforts to match these peaks in your recovery is the goal of every training plan. It is a cycle of stress and repair that slowly transforms you into a much more capable athlete. Without supercompensation, your body would simply wear out from the constant physical demands of the sport.
