A swinging volley is a powerful shot where a player hits the ball out of the air using a full groundstroke swing. Most volleys are short, punching motions, but this version uses the same long motion as a forehand or backhand. It is typically used on high, floating balls that have not yet bounced. By hitting it in the air, the player takes away the opponent’s time to recover. This is an extremely aggressive move that often results in an immediate winner. It requires excellent timing because the ball is moving faster in the air than after a bounce. Players use this to punish weak, loopy shots that would otherwise give the opponent a chance to reset. For example, if an opponent hits a high defensive lob that lands short, a player might move forward and hit a swinging volley for the win. This shot turns a slow defensive ball into a high-speed attack. It is a favorite weapon for modern players who want to end points quickly.
