Switch Play Meaning in Netball

A switch play is an offensive maneuver where the ball moves rapidly from one side to the other. This tactic aims to shift the defense and exploit the space created on the opposite side. By changing the point of attack, the team can catch defenders out of their preferred positions. It often starts with a short pass followed by a long, wide throw to an open player. A wing attack initiates a switch play by passing across the court to the goal attack. This movement forces the entire defensive unit to adjust their feet and vision very quickly. Effective switch plays are a great way to break down a stubborn and crowded midcourt press. One real-world example involves a center throwing a long ball to the far sideline to find space.
